Scope

MEMS/NEMS, systems biology, synthetic bacteria, and lab/process-on-a-chip techniques have advanced to the extent that it is now feasible to realize communications between chemical “circuits”, custom organisms, micro/nanoscale swarms of devices, and a host of other new systems at small length scales, and across multiple scales (e.g., micro to macro). In molecular, biological and multiscale communication (MBMC) systems, large numbers of autonomous and distributed (bio)-nanomachines communicate between each other and/or with macroscale systems to provide innovative applications. Unlike current telecommunication systems, MBMC systems are often able to operate closely with biological systems in a massively parallel and energy efficient manner, and their applications to areas and domains, to which traditional communication technology may not be directly applicable, are anticipated.

The proposed workshop provides a forum for researchers to discuss latest research results concerning:

  • Signal processing techniques for MBMC systems
  • Information theory and coding theory for MBMC systems
  • Communication protocols for (bio)-nanomachines (e.g., synchronization, MAC, routing protocols)
  • Network architecture for MBMC
  • Interfaces between (bio)-nanomachines and external devices
  • Distributed control and collective behavior of (bio)-nanomachines
  • Complex network theory for MBMC systems
  • Applications of MBMC systems
  • Design, engineering, and experiments of MBMC systems
  • Standardization of MBMC and networking

The proposed workshop consists of invited talks and technical paper presentation. In addition, a panel session is organized to discuss how to accelerate the advancement of this emerging area in the Asia-Pacific region by developing a structured research agenda across the region and making a strategic plan to raise awareness about this area among industry sectors, funders, and policy-makers in the region.

Follow the IEEE SECON 2018 paper submission guidelines. However, the page length is limited to 4 pages and the double-blind review does not apply (submitted papers will be reviewed by the TPC members). All accepted papers will be included in the IEEE SECON 2018 companion Workshops proceedings and appear in IEEE Xplore.
